I know it’s tempting to stay at home reading a book or watching a movie in front of the fireplace. Trust me, I do plenty of that. But every now and then it’s nice to do something different. It just takes a little research, planning and maybe stepping out of your comfort zone. I love going to Museums, especially in Winter. Here are some ideas to get you through the season.
Last week Claire drove us over to Clinton Massachusettes to visit the Museum of Russian Icons. It was fascinating. Just 45 minutes from home through beautiful Western Mass.; this museum is top notch. It may have been 20 degrees outside but the sun was shining, the roads were dry and the scenery, dusted with snow was spectacular. We were lucky enough to be there when they were featuring a photo exhibit of Siberia. That ended Saturday but this destination should definitely go on your list of day trips.
Did You Know that there is a Covered Bridge Museum? YES! It’s at the Bennington Center for the Arts in Bennington Vermont. You could visit the museum over the Winter and then next Summer or Fall take a tour of all the covered Bridges in New England. Vermont alone, has 160 Covered Bridges. Here’s one I visited with friends in Edinburgh, New York last Fall.
The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is another great Winter day trip. Explore the courtyard garden along with the many galleries of Ms. Gardner’s collection of paintings, furniture, sculpture and textiles. In 1903 the museum was completed and remains a Boston treasure to this day. But on March eighteenth, 1990, 500 million dollars worth of paintings by Rembrandt, Manet and Vermeer were stolen from the museum. It’s a fascinating story, as yet unsolved by the FBI. Best of all, why not spend the day at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston? http://www.mfa.org Considered one of the finest museums in the world, the MFA is my favorite indoor Winter destination. Maybe you would like to become a member and get free admission for an entire year. Bring a friend and receive discounts on parking and in the restaurant. Yesterday I spent the entire day at the MFA with family yet the collection is so huge we couldn’t possibly enjoy it all in one visit. Surrounded by so much inspiration and beauty along with Paninis and Pizza for lunch, can you think of a better way to shift your energy this Winter?
I wonder what she’s thinking? Is that a knife in her hand?
Keep your spirits up this Winter, and let us know how you get through the season.
