Add Water for Good Health

We all know the obvious reasons for drinking at least eight glasses of water a day. Pick up most any health or beauty magazine and you will find the wonders and benefits of flushing your system. They tell you how the body is approximately 60 percent water and the brain as much as 90 percent, so an adequate amount of water will naturally maintain a healthy balance of bodily fluids. It promises to:

infused waterincrease your energy
lubricate your joints
maintain dental health
control your appetite
flush impurities
improve your skin

But it may be the most important reason to drink a lot of water is to maintain a healthy immune system. Consider this. Your body needs help trying to neutralize all the toxins it accumulates in a day. It takes a lot of water to flush all the pesticides, alcohol, sugar, bacteria and viruses attacking each cell. Think of a waterfall; the rocks are clean and smooth from the power of that water rushing over the top.

It is recommended that you drink a minimum of one ounce of water for every two pounds of body weight. A 150 pound person should drink eight to nine glasses per day. Tea and broth count, but juice, soda and milk do not. They produce waste, while water, tea and broth remove it. Fruit infused water has become very popular now. Fill a pitcher with purified water and add strawberries, cucumbers and lemons. This would be a great time of year to experiment with other summer fruits.

In Ayurveda we recommend drinking room temperature water. Ice water shocks the body and can inhibit the digestive fire. Also DO NOT GULP! It introduces air into your digestive tract. Just slow down, grab your book, sit on the porch and sip. You’ll enjoy a healthy, hydrated summer!
